Dear Sierra Unified Community,

The start of a new school year is always filled with possibility. Across Sierra Unified, classrooms are buzzing with energy, students are reconnecting with classmates, and teachers are welcoming them back with lessons designed to spark curiosity and growth. It remains one of the most hopeful times of the year; a reminder that every school year is a fresh chance to help our students, and each other, grow stronger.

As I visit our campuses, I'm continually inspired by the people who make our schools exceptional. Teachers, classified staff, administrators, bus drivers, custodians, food service employees, and many others worked all summer to make sure our campuses were ready for students. Their commitment creates the safe, welcoming environment every child deserves, and the peace of mind every family relies on.

While a new year naturally turns our attention forward, it's worth pausing to recognize what our students and staff have already achieved. Last year, Sierra Unified saw English language arts scores on the SBAC rise by more than 4.5 percent, with both ELA and math indicators improving on the California Dashboard. Third-grade reading proficiency climbed six percent by the final diagnostic assessment, proof that our investment in early literacy is paying off. Preliminary data suggest even stronger gains for 2025-26.

These gains didn't happen by chance. They reflect the collective effort of dedicated educators, engaged families, and hardworking students, supported by strategic investments in literacy coaching, math instruction, and expanded counselor support; investments that are producing measurable results and building a stronger foundation for the future.

Our vision extends beyond test scores. We're committed to preparing every student for life after graduation, whether that means college, career training, military service, or the workforce. Expanded college and career planning, stronger trade and technical pathways, and new academic planning resources are helping students explore their futures with confidence. At the same time, we continue to encourage participation in athletics, visual and performing arts, clubs, and other activities that build belonging and connection.

Sierra Unified's success has always been rooted in partnership. When schools, families, and our community work together, students benefit in remarkable ways, and that collaboration will continue to guide our work as we pursue ambitious goals: stronger academic achievement, higher attendance, and a caring adult connection for every student on campus.

As another school year begins, I remain optimistic about what we can accomplish together. Our progress is a reminder that meaningful improvement happens one student at a time. By continuing to invest in our children and support one another, we strengthen not just our schools, but the future of our entire community.

School's back in session; let's help our students reach their full potential together.

With Sierra Mountain pride,
Dr. Lori Grace
Superintendent, Sierra Unified School District
