3.27.26 SUSD Weekly Message from the Superintendent

Dear Sierra Unified Community,
Autism Awareness Month
As we approach April, we look ahead to Autism Awareness Month – a time to recognize, celebrate, and deepen our understanding of the many students, families, and staff in our community who are part of the autism spectrum. At Sierra Unified School District, this month is not only about awareness – it is about acceptance, inclusion, and our shared commitment to ensuring every student feels seen, supported, and valued.
Autism is a spectrum, and each individual brings their own unique strengths, perspectives, and ways of experiencing the world. In our classrooms, we see creativity, attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and deep passions that enrich the learning environment for everyone. When we embrace these differences, we strengthen our entire community.
As educators, our responsibility is to create learning environments where all students can succeed. This means meeting students where they are, providing individualized supports, and ensuring that every child has access to meaningful educational opportunities. Across Sierra Unified, our teachers, specialists, and support staff work collaboratively to provide inclusive classrooms, targeted interventions, and the social-emotional supports students need to thrive.
Autism Awareness Month also serves as an important reminder of the role we all play in fostering understanding and kindness. Inclusion is not just about programs or service – it is about everyday actions. It is how we welcome one another, how we show patience and empathy, and how we ensure that every student feels a sense of belonging on our campuses.
For families, this month can be both a celebration and a moment to reflect on the journey. We recognize the partnership it takes between home and school to support students with diverse needs, and we are grateful for the trust our families place in us. Your insights, advocacy, and collaboration are essential to the success of your children and to the strength of our district as a whole.
We also encourage our broader community to take this time to learn more about autism and the importance of inclusive practices. Small steps – such as learning about sensory sensitivities, understanding different communication styles, or simply modeling acceptance – can have a lasting impact.
At Sierra Unified, our goal is not only to raise awareness for one month, but to carry these values forward every day. We are committed to building a culture where differences are respected, strengths are celebrated, and every student has the opportunity to reach their full potential.
As we recognize Autism Awareness Month, let us continue to lead with compassion, understanding, and a shared belief that every student belongs.
Warmly,
Dr. Lori GraceSuperintendent
